Walking the ways of Auckland
Do you remember walking to school through suburbia and taking a well used shortcut through seemingly endless housing estates? I grew up in Papakura in the 80’s/90’s and we lived next to a walkway. It was a source of play, chat, gymnastics and night time adventures so I have a fondness for these sneakers dotted around our towns.
I’m a bit of a suburban explorer and I’m often out walking around Auckland of a weekend. One of my favourite things to do on these walks is to notice the world around me, including when I find a walkway. Many of these have been fenced off, filled in or destroyed so I think it’s important that these are documented before they all disappear.
As more people drive, fewer people are out and using these walkways and they’re gradually disappearing. Hence, walkways.co.nz, a little site where I document the walkways, often leave location details and hope that one day, someone will find this and experience the little sneaky joy that discovering a walkway leaves behind.

Barrister to Henshaw, Three Kings
Barrister Ave to Henshaw Ave, Three Kings Sneaky! I was surprised by this sneaky walkway which cuts out about a 15 minute walk to Countdown Three Kings. With the Three Kings Reserve back entrance to the shops closed to foot traffic, I was diverted up and over a grassy, muddy hill to arrive somewhere in… Read more

Aroha to Cornwallis, Sandringham
Aroha Ave to Cornwallis St, Sandringham This is actually one of my favourite walkways I’ve encountered. It’s a cut through from Aroha Ave in Sandringham right down into the carpark of the local St Luke’s mall and it’s just so convenient and well used. However, it’s not remotely accessible with TWO sets of barriers to… Read more
